I don't see how it is considered selfish. It isn't physically hurting anyone else. Usually, a person considering it will be missed for about a couple of months and then forgot about just like any other person who passes away...It doesn't matter how they go, they are still gone either way. In my opinion, some people are just better off not being here (ex. someone who constantly makes mistakes in life, someone who puts a burden on others-financially, emotionally..whatever. someone who just feels that they are worthless and not contributing anything positive to society) They don't need to be here, they are just taking up space.....SO, why is suicide selfish?

Please call 1-800-SUICIDE and talk to them about your questions.
There are worse ways to hurt someone than physically. Your perception of how a person will be missed is just wrong. When a loved one dies in a way that could have been avoided, the people who loved them never get over it. They struggle to rebuild their lives around this most painful wound.
Suicide is selfish because while you escape your unhappiness instead of being strong and learning to contribute and recognize your worth, the ones you leave behind will be sad forever. They will not only miss you but they will always suffer guilt for not having been able to foresee and prevent the suicide. They will also feel the most pathetic part of the tragedy : that you were too short-sighted to see that life is change and things do get better, even when we can hardly believe it possible.
You are not seeing the big picture and you are not putting out the effort to make your life into something more fulfilling. Many people who have much more pain and sorrow have toughed it out and found that happiness and self-worth can be found.

I agree with you that it's not really "selfish". Even if contributing positively to society, some people really don't have people that care much about them and after a couple of months would be forgotten anyway, that's reality. Also, people who commit suicide are usually in a lot of emotional pain, how the h... can you blame them for being "selfish".

this is most often said by a spouse because the remaining partner is left with a lot of things to deal with and left to deal with it alone, you would have to imagine being married with bills, children, situations, and so on. It like taking the easy way out and also If they were to go to hell the spouse is really left alone. So mostly its in refference to a partnership, and because that person is loved by otheres and has committments in this life, there is just cause for saying this you'll just have to think about it in difference situations and thru time as you hear difference stories about suicide and grow in your mind as to what situations are possible you'll see it, patience, Kim

Well lets see you have no consideration that the people who love you are going to hurt because they didn't know and think what they did wrong they couldn't see it coming and help seeing they will miss you it is selfish and an easy way out of your problems it is for the weak minded

You have a pretty cynical outlook on life but I'm sure there's some reason for it. But suicide is selfish because of all the people you devastate. Your mother isn't going to forget about you in a couple of months. Neither is anyone else who loves you. A suicide is so desperate of an act that anyone who loves you would guilt themselves for the rest of their lives probably because they weren't able to 'save you'.

Because you aren't taking into account how horrible others will feel and what you're leaving behind. For example, you may be leaving behind a child, or a younger sibling who comes to you for everything. It's selfish because you're so snarled up in your own problems, you can't see past them. (This is why therapists often urge depressed people to volunteer--so we can see others' problems.) I can say this because I am a survivor of suicide attempts.

It is selfish because the people you leave behind are in constant turmoil wondering if they could have said or did something to help you.Saying they are taking up space just shows why some people commit suicide.Because of people like you.Do you feel good!?

I agree. The people who say suicide is selfish use the assumption that the person's relatives/friends will be hurt/sad and miss that person. But that's paradoxical. If the person really had friends who cared about and liked him/her, then
1. He/she would be less likely to consider suicide
2. He/she would have a support network to depend on

some people consider it selfish because other people are emotional hurt by it.

i agree some people are better not being here though, but not just because they screw up a little.

i hate when people put a burden on my financially, like when my roommate eats me food because he doesnt have a money. but i dont think he should die, just work more.

suicide is selfish because ur taking the easy way out of life. Everyone has problems in their life and it gives everyone the right to commit suicide, but they appreciate the precious life that was given to them by God. Commiting suicide is like giving the present ur grandma gave u for christmas and saying u dont want it. By taking ur life ur giving the gift that God gave, especially you, back to him and that is not only selfish but is is in fact ungrateful.
