can a mobo that suppports sata 1.5 gb/s support a hd that is sata 3.0 gb/s?

The first two answers are certainly not correct.

The correct answer is maybe. It depends on which chipset you have in the hard drive controller that is in the motherboard and which hard drive you are going to use. Some SATA 3.0 drives have a jumper that you can set to force them to SATA 1.5. Those do not always work. Others do work.

I have had a lot of experience with this issue. In that experience, Western Digital brand drives have ususally worked. Maxtor/Seagate drives have usually not worked. Other brands sometimes do, sometimes don't.

One solution is to use an add-in controller board. I have had mostly good results from them.

This is another case where theory says one thing and practice says another. In theory it should work, in practice, it may or may not.

Yes, but the hard drive will only be able to transfer at the maximum speed that the motherboard permits. So you would be losing a lot of potential transfer rate.
