Why do people think it's funny to make racist jokes about Asians?

People make jokes about other races or religions because either 1) they've had experiences with them that make the jokes seem funny, or 2) because they are a part of that culture and find a sense of community in those jokes.

If a type of person seems too foriegn, if you have had bad experience with them, or you choose to believe a sterotype about them, these jokes can cause you to bond with someoe else over your similarities, as you and the listener distance yourselves from the people you're joking about. Also, if the people are from a culture where the people being joked about are often viewed as enemies (Ireland-England, Christianity-Judaism, Blacks-Whites) these jokes can help the jokers feel a sense of superiority. I'm in no way saying this is right, just a trend I've observed.

However, I've also found that people inside those groups to tell these jokes about themselves. It's healthy for people and cultures to be able to take a step back and joke about sterotypes and themes that they are all to familiar with. However, when an outsider does this it can be hurtful, because they are not doing it with any sense of kinship.

I'm guessing that however this joke was told, it did not fell funny to you. Please don't take it too personally. People can say things out of spite and ignorance. However, if you take it to heart, it is you who will suffer and not them.

yeah i agree with some pple above me that there a jokes about every race and just not asians, this doesn't make it any moer righ to do so though. dw about it, if anyone makes an asian joke and it offends u jsut tell them and try to not be around them if u think thats best.

i once had a friend saying that the japanese girl in the 2006 miss universe was "hot for an asian", to me it ment that she didn't think that asians were good looking. i hurt me alot and i dont think i'll ever forget what she said. though there are so many jokes about other races aswell its a cruel thing to do. but some times i guess u jsut have to ignore it.

That's interesting you would say that because it made me think and I don't ever remember anyone ever saying a joke about Asians.But I am from Greenville.South Carolina.where I don't believe theres a large number of Asians living there. perhaps people from other parts of the country will say jokes about them.I know some Asians. Some fine Chinese people from church.have met some Vietnamese.and some friends who are Buddhists.Its interesting that people make fun of them when I have never heard any jokes. I have heard some black jokes though.but not many.just the lower class people make fun of others.and I don't usually associate with low class people. Low class people like to make fun of others to make them feel better about themselves.and to they think bring themselves above others when In fact there lowering themselves by making fun of others.I don't need to do that nor do people I associate with.I at least try to have a love for all people personally.I wish you the best.Peace

I personally do not believe there is any humor in racist jokes. Instead it shows just how ingorant the one who is doing the joke telling really is.

It still has to do with the difference in people. People will look for a difference in other people and because of their ignorance they make fun of those differences.

Thank God we are not not all from the same mold. Life would be very boring.

Ok people, there is a difference between being racist and making stereotypes... 'Racist' by definition is a belief that one race is superior to another. Now unless people are saying, "Go back to Asia, we don't want you here" then no one is making racist jokes about you. Stereotypes are ways for people to have their fun at other people's expense. And its not only Asians, but every race on the planet. Stereotypes are meant to be funny and that is it. Lets think about some common stereotypes shall we?

Asians- Bad drivers= oh my god how dare you think I can't drive! Get over it! That is not offensive
Black People- Fried Chicken= How dare you say that we love Fried Chicken! Once again, what is offensive about liking Fried Chicken?
White-Trailer Parks= Ok maybe a little mean, by saying that they can't afford a bigger house, but oh well suck it up.

if i need more to convince you people, you are mad... just get over it or get even. stereotypes are just ways to pick at people.

Why do people think it's funny to make racist jokes about any ethnicity...its called ignorance and stupidity.

Unfortunately its in all races in all countries. I been lived in 3 continents and visited 5. I think it will always be this way - some people never learn.

A joke is a joke. Every nationality makes jokes about the next one. It has been going on for many years and will continue to. Don't take it personally. Do you take a joke about a mother or father personally. Laugh with them.

The same reason people think it's funny to make white, Hispanic, black, etcetera jokes. I think they're rude and pretty ignorant, but we all need to learn to laugh at our race sometime. I make jokes about white people every now and then and I'm whiter than an albino. Just learn to laugh at yourself. If someone hurts your feelings or takes a joke about your race too far, tell them. If you want people to stop herassing, it starts with you.

I don't find racist jokes towards Asians, latinos, blacks, midde-easterners, etc. funny at all.
