Ad-Aware SE Personal edition is free and effective in my eyes. I use it and it works fine, but I would get a hold of something like Norton as soon as possible. Usually, it takes more than a freeware removal tool to get rid of a virus if you have little patience and little experience with computers. Depending on how serious the virus is (I'm assuming that it can't be to bad as you are actually on a functioning Internet connection) Ad-Aware Personal edition should take care of it. You can download the software for free at here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
Technically, it is an anti-spyware tool, but a lot of viruses that strike computers are usually a result of spyware. I hope this helps and I honestly encourage you to get some professional removal tools as soon as it becomes economically feasible. Also, having several free removal tools on top of the professional tool will help keep your PC clean if you consistently scan it.

I like AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test chart is here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)
And it updates 12 to 15 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.
Free for everyone from:

As suggested get AVG free. Also download Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Spyware Blaster. All of these are free.
Also, before you run the scans, make sure you clear your System Restore as viruses and other malware can be part of your restore points.
