Have msn.com as home page and every time I log onto internet, tracking cookies come up. I learned this from using Ad-Aware SE to try and stop cookies and spy ware. HELP. Not very PC hip so make it simple as possible.

Cookies are just small .txt (text) files that by themselves cannot hurt your computer. They are not a virus, but some people consider "tracking" cookies to be an invasion of privacy.

It all depends on one's level of paranoria.

Tracking cookies are mostly "3rd party cookies" from advertising servers. They can track your movements around the web in order to deliver to you customised, targeted advertising.

If you are using Internet Explorer for a browser, you can permanantly block all 3rd party cookies. Go to tools > internet options > privacy > advanced > checkmark "override automatic cookie handling" > third party cookies > tick "block" > ok > ok.

Add Spybot to your protection. It has a Immunize feature. Use it. Then add spyware blaster.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

You may also want to adjust your cookie setting.

Click on Tools>Internet Options>Privacy> now move the slider up one notch.

Disable cookies in your browser.

You don't say which browser you use, but if you're still using the one that just comes with Microsoft Windows, then its:

Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Advanced

If you've upgraded to Mozilla Firefox, then its just

Tools -> Options -> Privacy

Cookies aren't dangerous though, and are generally actually helpful and useful.

Make sure you have an up-to-date anti-virus program running at all times. Ensure you always install all the Microsoft Windows updates. Keep your firewall on. Don't click on any pop-up windows. Don't install any software you don't understand.

Or upgrade to Linux :)
