I once heard that it was possible to create a sword with a diamond edge that was laser sharpened and was incredibly powerful compared to regular swords of fine craftsmanship. I'm wondering if it's really possible and how good it would be.

The sword edge would have to be lined with diamonds. So you wouldn't have a continuous edge, but more like a hack saw blade.

Diamonds are hard but relatively brittle. Strikiing something with it would result in breakage of the sharpened edges. It would work well as a cutting edge.

Diamonds are used in abrasive applications, like industrial "sand" paper and grinding wheels. But the quick loss of a sharp edge would make for a very dull blade.

Swords have several qualities that make them excellent weapons, but sharpness is not the most important and hardness can work against you.

Diamonds are the hardest substance on earth, for that reason alone they would make a poor edge. A sword must be resilient, able to absorb the impact of a block or parry. Blades that are hard suffer more stress than softer blades that absorb and spread impact forces.

You're also facing the issue of how to attach diamonds to a sword edge. I just don't think there's a way to do this that wouldn't sprinkle the landscape with diamonds whenever you swing the thing. This might be an effective battle tactic, allowing you to dispatch greedy enemies at your own leisure while they scrabble for loose diamonds. Still it sounds like an expensive and needlessly complex solution.

Sword designs have been refined for thousands of years. Mix in modern metalurgy and sword makers today have the ability to make the best swords seen on the planet...the experts seem to agree that the best swords are still made out of steel.

A diamond edged weapon is actually a very real thing, My father was is SF and they gave him twin diamond edged combat knives witch he kept. The diamonds are cut a specific way and forged into the sword in a similar way that katana's are forged. The diamonds are pre-cut so the brittle part of the diamond is not exposed and it is the most dangerous blade i have ever held. they sharpen the blade with a laser after it is finished. the blades are sharp enough that if you drop a straw right over it it cuts it clean through, well made katana's can do this, plus the durability and hardness that only diamonds hold. I would love a sword made like this but this but finding someone that can do it is difficult enough, i have yet to find anyone, and the cost would be astronomical. Personally i would want a metorite blade with a high amount of titanium in it with a diamond edge forge like a traditional katana.

I don't think it is possible to create a sword made out of diamonds, but they could put diamonds on the edge like that. I bet it would be really sharp or not very good at all.
