I had a hard time starting off my book. Just make jot notes on where you want it to go, like a choose your own adventure type thing. Make a web extending from each possible beginning, and choose the one that works for you! Good Luck!

Great question for me! I am soon to be a published author, so I can really speak to this. Don't force the idea. You want to write a book. Ok, just live your life and just let your imagination start working on a good story idea. That's what works for me. Usually after a little while (a few days or weeks) I come up with a new idea.
To me the hardest part of writing a story is finding an ending!

If you're not quite sure where to start, just write a lot of different scenese that take place in the story. It will start to arrange itself naturally, and that should show you if you need to write something before those scenes or if one of them could be used to start your book.

If you're still unsure, you could get a book on plot, like "Plot & Structure" by James Scott Bell and see if there are any suggestions there.

Also, in one of my MFA classes, my professor suggested we start stories on "The Day That Is Different" - in other words, where does the main thrust of the story start? What is different in the characters' lives that triggers the beginning of the events that happen in your story?

Happy writing!
