mercutio: 1. love: he finds it fun to play and taunt about with it, he is more of the type who would be flirtatious by todays standards, more carefree.
2. dreams: he does not express many dreams of past or future, leading me to believe he is a person who lives more "in the present" and does not plan his life out carefully, lives whimsically and by moment.
3. mercutio thinks of being a man as upholding your honor, and is much more into the duel, and revenge things, as shown when he accepts tybalts duel.

romeo:
1. love: he is more of a believer in deep strong love for one person, and devotes his heart to them, likes the idea of having that "one special person" such as rosalind. he mourns her rejection of him for days and days, concerning his whole family.
2. dreams: he is a very emotional person, and he wants very much for his family and juliets family to become friends, since he loves juliet deeply, but often ruins his plans by his impulsive actions, which he puts no thought into, such as his decision to kill tybalt for mercutio.
3. what it means to be a man. romeo does not think that one must use a sword and do the whole honor act to be a man. he is a strong believer of love.

mercutios role in the play: he is the trickster, a joker, and adds humor to the play, but also provokes strong emotions in certain characters, such as the prince since he is a kinsman of the prince, or romeo, for they are friends

this helps the audience understand romeo better because his death brings out the impulsive and emotional side of romeo.

If this link doesn't work, go to cliffsnotes.com and put romeo and juliet in the search bar. It will give you many choices "List of characters" etc..

Here is an example from the site:

Mercutio Kinsman to the prince and friend of Romeo. His name comes from the word mercury, the element which indicates his quick temper. Mercutio is bawdy, talkative, and tries to tease Romeo out of his melancholy frame of mind. He accepts Tybalt’s challenge to defend Romeo’s honor and is killed, thus precipitating Romeo’s enraged reaction during which Romeo kills Tybalt.

H-Humor. The nurse is very funny, for example when she speaks of when Juliet was little and crying about falling down, in Act one scene three, and the nurse recalls upon her husband poking fun at little Juliet.
