the biggest problem is that a lot of stories about someone arent modern stories. its their past.

so they need someone who looks the part.

there are some movies that could use the actual people, but most cant.

One thing i do like is when the real person plays int he movie somewhere:

Glory Road: Look towards the beggining of the movie when the coaches are going out to recruit players. One stops at a gas station and fills up while making a phone call.. The gas station attendent is the real person Josh Lucas plays.

Apollo 13: Jim Lovel plays a captain at the end of the movie. you see him speaking to Tom Hanks (from the side) in a while officer uniform. Marilyn Lovell can be seen at the launch, with huge sunglasses on standing in front of the actress who plays her.

RUDY: in the last game in the movie, the family is standing in the stands. Look behind them and there will be two guys. One is dark haired and short (not a mustache).. and a irish hat. Thats Rudy (the real person).

Men of Honor: Carl Breshear is somewhere in it as a night club Patron (i assume at the blacks club).

and there are many others.

Yes, I am sure they can unless they have aged a lot since the incident about them happened or if they can act. Not all of them can act but I have noted that somewhere in the movie, they use the real person in a minor part. It's fun to watch the credits and find the name of the person actually in the movie playing such a small part. Then you want to go back and check out the scenes so you will know what they look like.

I remember seeing Patch Adams and at the end of the movie, it showed the real Patch and he looked nothing like I thought he would.

Good question.

Most studios won't let the actual person play themselves (unless it's a famous person telling the story of their life like Mariah Carey)

"Ordinary people" just dont have box office draw like Brad Pitt or other big name celebs.

Yes for example the movie "To Hell and Back." The true WWII story of Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier in U.S. history. Based on the autobiography of Audie Murphy who stars as himself in the film.
