I have the Mirena IUD (inter uterine device) it is in my uterus. It is made of plastic not metal as someone above has stated. It has stopped my painful heavy periods.

They don't even use Norplant anymore but are working on something called Implanon.

There are two popular forms of IUDs in the USA. The first is Mirena, it is a hormonal IUD. The second is Paragard. It is non hormonal. It is made of copper. Mirena is good for five years and can stop your period. Paragard is good for 10 years. Many women have heavier, longer periods with Paragard. I have Paragard and experience this side effect, however it is supposed to tailor off to not so heavy after a few months. For the first few months with either IUD, you may have some spotting, but that also goes away after a couple of months. I had spotting for the first two months. If you are having trouble with regular birth controls because of forgetting to take it, you may want to try Mirena. But if you're having problems with the hormones in it, you should try Paragard because it has no hormones. Despite what the manufactures say about Mirena only allowing the hormones to go directly and only into your uterus is bull. It can get into your bloodstream and give you the same problems as regular birth control. Talk to your doctor about an IUD.

As everyone said before me an IUD is placed inside your uterus. They do stop periods of some, but others they have a light period or heavy (depending on the IUD since there's to).

I have the Mirena IUD for the past 5 months and it has not stopped my period but made it incredibly less painful to a spotting and it's going to take up to a year for my body to get full use to the fact of an IUD.

Uhhh...if your IUD was implanted in your arm, you're in HUGE trouble! An IUD is an Intra-Uterine Device...in other words it is inserted in your UTERUS.

If you're thinking of Norplant, yes, that is the only place that is inserted. However, before you go through with the insertion procedure, you should maybe consider trying the Depo shot; it's the same chemical. However, if you get a bad reaction from it (which about 40% of all women do) you just don't get another shot. If you get the Norplant, you'll have to get another incision to get the contraceptive sticks removed from under your skin.

Iud In Your Arm

No, never in the arm. It stands for intrauterine device, so that is where it is placed. They do not stop periods; in fact, they made mine worse and I had it removed.

You probably are thinking about the implant in the arm that helps your period. A friend of mine had the Norplant device placed in her arm and after six months, had it removed. It just depends on if you don't have a problem with it, because a lot of women do have problems on Norplant.

Best wishes.

Sorry.

If you mean intrauterine device, then no it is not implanted in the arm at all. An intrauterine device is put into a woman's uterus. As for stopping periods, they do in some women, depends on the type you get.

No, it's called an intrauterine device.. it goes in the uterus.
Norplant is implanted in the arm and lasts for 5 years, but you still have periods.

IUDs are not implanted in the arm, they are placed in the uterus (they are called intra uterine devices). it's a coiled wire placed in the uterus. they do not stop periods. they are a form of birth control. however, if it fails, it can cause the baby to develop with the wire in it's head or other parts of it's body. there are, in my opinion, safer and easier forms of birth control.
