Why do black americans want to go back to live in Africa?

The freedom, education and all the privileges you enjoy came at the expense of your ancestors who were brought here by force.

If not for your slave ancestors - you would be in a poverty, disease stricken country.

Please debate with respect.

From the responses I've been getting it seems that I did not make my question clear. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.

After talking to several of my black friends, it seems a common desire/dream to leave the United States and reside in Africa. From what I have been told, the treatment of black Americans warrants this desire and is further fueled by the need to be with "our own kind". Herein lies my quandary.

From my humble point of view, present day black Americans have been given a unique opportunity. However, this opportunity had a very high price (slavery).
White europeans brought the black slaves to the states. However, by bringing them here their generations of ancestors (you) have been changed forever.

You have been given the opportunity to receive an education, pursue your desires/dreams, etc. - which is almost unheard of for blacks in Africa.

If you look at the current situation

Oh good lord. I swear, if you want to read some angry people's comments, here they are!!!!! Well, I guess from off the street I would be considered a White person. But I guess really since my ancestors weren't American Indian I'm European American. Little bit of German, English, Scottish, Irish, I guess anything white. So I wonder if any of "my people" have ever been in slavery, I'm gonna hold that over everyones head for the rest of my life and live in anger. Grrrrrrrrr!!!!!

I'm South American decent with aboriginal indian, german and Chinese...so this view I guess some may judge as may not qualify ...but it seems by your remarks that it starts with you being a racist
your quote "If not for your slave ancestors - you would be in a poverty, disease stricken country."

maybe its an American thing and I am wrong but I have never heard anyone of my friends say they want to go back to their homeland..Hold on a sec many of my friends have no relatives in Africa and as they are for decades and generation from caribean countries..Not all black americans have ancesters who were slaves in America ...many are new immigrants from Afirca and are extremly nice people who have lives that do not find a need to worry about other people
That other person is right ...many Jewish friend I know ...are not born in Israel but say they want to go back to their homeland ...why are you not picking on them as well ????

Well to begin I have to ask if the slaves weren't forced here who would have done the work to make America what it is today? The Indians and indentured servants were not, so who?

I think black Americans want to go VISIT the country their ancestors came from like white Americans visit Europe. And if they did want to go live that is them. I know a lot of people who have moved to Europe. So what is the big deal?

I am Black and I have never been to Africa. I have wanted to go to Africa since I was in the 10th grade, I feel like something is missing. I always had friends of other races growing up and when I asked where their ancestors where from most of them knew, most of them could tell me exactly where they came from and it hurt because I barely knew anything. I don't know Africa, the place where my ancestors where born. I just want to know.

I think that would be great and not for the reasons your thinking. They would be able to help in their counrty and prosper from the knowledge they learned here and help. But unfortunatly most Africans will be moving out of their country because of no water in the next 5 years and they will have to relocate-and thats too bad it is a beautiful country and they just need to work harder at making it work-replanting and taking care of the land is the only way but they have never done it and now it is almost useless.

I am African American and let me speak for my self and not the the black collective. I don't want to go back to Africa. I can't go back to a place that I never been. I would love to visit to know where my roots came from. I think that some may feel oppressed and that they have more opportunities there. Go figure.

As a "black American" I can't "go back" to a place I've never been. For those who do want to go to any country its their right. Why does that bother you? As for me, I sought citizenship in Australia but was five points short. Not that I don't like the US, I just REALLY enjoy vacationing in Australia. Perhaps some people do not realize that the US is not the only country that one can enjoy. My "black American" friend who is an Air Traffic Controller will retire next year. He has already purchased his home in Spain where he will live out the rest of his days.

Have you ever been to Africa, no. What gives you the right to speak on the state of Africa when you obviously haven't been there? The majority of Africa doesn't fit you stereotype. And had it not been for your greedy ancestors the remaining parts would not be in the state it is in.

i wish all African Americans wanted to go back home to Africa,a country that needs our talented people like doctors, lawyers, contractors, landscapers, stockbrokers, judges etc.we could build it up stronger than America a real utopia right smack in the garden of Eden, the cradle of civilization. But alas, white folk could not survive without all the service and entertainment we provide for them.and with all that loud rock music taking over the United States would be blown off the face of the earth.
