Cheers is really expensive, and generally crowded with tourists. If you're new to the city it's nice to check out, but I don't think I would say it's the best bar in Boston. . . .It really depends on what part of Boston you want to be in. I like most of the places in Harvard Square (technically Cambridge) or the places around Fenway, like Boston Beer Works. . . .Depends what you're looking for. Try digital city, they give you lists, based on different topics for bars, like top 10's!

Cheers is WAY overrated and touristy. It's the kind of place that you would go to once, to have a drink and say you've been there, but not to go to to genuinely hang out.

I agree with Sunset Grill and Tap in Allston (of course that's also near where I live). Some of the neighborhood bars are more authentic and better too. And as someone else said, Wally's on Mass. Ave. is also great.

Cheers is nice but like another post stated a lot of tourists. We went to the Boston Beer Works which was cool. They makes all their own beer and are located right beside Fenway Park. I had a lot of the Bluebeery Ale when we ere there.

Boston is a big city with a large number of bars, including many specialty bars. It depends on the atmosphere you are looking for, type of patrons (locals, young people, business types, etc), type of music, etc.

I would also check out some of the travel web sites that offer details/feedback/reviews before you decide.

Lucky's in South Boston. It's modeled after a 50's lounge. Very cool place to hang and eat. The Red Sox players frequent Lucky's. There is no sign outside saying Lucky's. It's the type of place you gotta be "in the know" to know about. It's downstairs. Also, for the movie "the Departed" with Leo DeCaprio and Jack Nicholson etc...Lucky's hosted the wrap cast party...very cool place.

We visited Boston last summer and Boston BrewWorks was right next to Fenway park and was cool.

But check out the BELL IN HAND TAVERN. America's oldest bar. It's on the cutest street ever. I don't know the name of the street but look it up online - it tells you about the bell in hand tavern.

Enjoy!

Cheers?! nah

It really depends on your scene and what you like to drink. For drinks The Barking Crab is good, it has a great view of the city, but is filled w/ yuppies. Shay's in Harvard Square has a good selection of wine and beers, it's a basementish bar. Sunset Grill and Tap in Allston is pretty sweet, good food and over 100 beers! Fajitas and Ritas makes a mean margarita.

Wally's on Mass Ave has Jazz and I find it to be the best bar. What exactly are you looking for in a place?
