There are muscles in the neck that work to keep the head stable and that allow you to move your head. Upper back muscles also assist in this task. Here is a list of some of the muscles: sternocleidomastoid, this muscle flexes the head and helps to rotate the head- it originates at the sternum and its insertion point is at the temporal bone; the semispinalis capitis muscle extends the head and bends it laterally; the splenius capitis muscle extends the head; and the longissimus capitis muscle extends, bends, and rotates the head. This is not every muscle but they are the major muscles.
