The sun is the center of our solar system. It's large mass and therefore pull of gravity keep the planets and minor solar system bodies in orbit. The radiation it emits affects the planets in many ways such as by warming them. Its magnetic field also protects the planets. The sun formed, most likely, from the same gas that the planets eventually formed from.

"Solar" means "belonging to the sun".

The Solar System belongs to the sun. The sun is almost everything of the Solar System.

Everything else in the Solar System - planets, moons, asteroids, comets, meteorites - account for about 1/1000 th of the sun.

The sun formed out of the primordial dust and gas cloud, and everything else in the Solar System is made up of the leftovers.
