An Artisan was and is a Workman,Builder , Carpenter, Plumber.Plasterer.It is still used to denote Crafsmen in some Countries notably France.It is Sometimes used in Ireland and England to denote a quality Product like Cheese or even Bespoke
Up Market Furniture, Artisan Furniture Maker etc.

I attended an artists' event in upstate New York last year, "artisian" was used in the brochue describing the work of weavers, potters, glass workers, wood-workers, painters, etc.
