I am having a hard time figuring this out, anyone help this is for my duaghter's homework. Yes I flunked math, sorry!

"Cent" mean "hundred", and the word "percent" means "per-hundredth". If you had 40 pounds of sand and wanted to take 5% from it, you could theoretically divide up the pounds into 100 little sand piles of equal weight and take five of those little piles away. You'd find that these five little points would have a net weight of 2 pounds all together.
5% means "divide what you have into one hundred pieces, and take five of those pieces." As a fraction that would be 5/100, which is the same thing as 1/20. One twentieth of 40 is is just 40 divide by 20, or 2.
I find that the best way to do these types of problems is to substitute "is" with "equals", "of" with "times", and "what" with "x". For example, if asked "80 is what percent of 250?", you can write it as "80 = x*250" and solve for x, then write the answer as a percent.

5% means 5/100 or 5 in every hundred. That is the same as 1/20 or 1 in every 20. If there is 1 in every 20 that means there are 2 in every 40. Hope that helps!

think of it this way: 10% of 40 would be 4, right? well, half of 10% is 5%, and half of 4 is 2, so 2 is 5% of 40.

5% is actually 5/100
5/100 x 40/1 = 200/100 = 2
Whenever you see the word "of" in a word problem, it's a code word for "multiply".

2 be 5% of 40 is more like writing it as
(5/100)*40=2
where 5% is (5/100)
Write it as 5% times 40 ...this will be 2 of course :)

Well, just count your 10 fingers and 10 toes and then count your daughter's fingers and toes and you have 40.
Then cut off 4 of your fingers (that's the 10%) and run to the hospítal to get just 2 of them attached again.
Then you just lost the 5% of both of you's fingers and toes.
