Two minutes is lots of time when you run no-huddle, lots of 80+ yard drives have been accomplished in the last 2 minutes to tie or win games. In fact they call it the "2 minute drill". You can orchestrate your plays to get out of bounds instead of getting tackled on-field, which stops the clock, use your timeouts, or spike the ball to stop the clock.

The clock also stops AT the two minute warning, as well, giving a free automatic timeout.

The reason its 2 minutes is because there can expire at most 30 seconds between downs - any longer, and the clock stops when you're called for delay of game. Stopping the clock at 2 minutes ensures that a team just cant sit on the ball on the last series of the game without at least giving the other team a chance to touch it again on offense, or at least on a punt return.

basically it helps the team that is losing by stoppign the clock, its 2 minutes of playing time(alot) not 2 minutes of real time, the last 2 minutes can last for 10 minutes if there are a lot of passing and timeouts

So that if the game is close teams can talk to their coach to get calmed down and strategize without blowing a timout that could make the difference between winning and losing.

it can be strategically used as a timeout if played correctly. it also helps a team set up the "two minute offense" a team utilizes when the clock is low.
