Are they born that way, or is it something they learn in Goblin School? (For goblin lore, read J.R.R. Tolkien or Raymond E. Feist.)

In the Book of Lost Tales (part 2) it says of "the Orcs who are Melko's goblins" .............."all that race were bred by Melko of the subterranean heats and slime. Their hearts were of granite and their bodies deformed; foul their faces which smiled not, but their laugh that of the clash of metal, and to nothing were they more fain than to aid in the basest of the purposes of Melko."
And it also says "more fearsome still were the wandering bands of the goblins and the Orcs"--foul broodlings of Melko who fared abroad doing his evil work, snaring and capturing beasts, and Men, and Elves, and dragging them to their lord."
So I guess goblins are nasty because their lord Melko was not a nice guy.

I think they were originally introuduced as villans by one author and the others picked it up. The same whay you know elves have pointed ears goblins are nasty. I think it's a set term but you can always write a book about a nice goblin
