depends on the scheme normally teams play a 4-3, 4 downline men(4), 3 Line backers(3) and 4 Defensive Backs, some teams(steelers and others) play a 3-4 3 downline men(3) and 4 line backers(4). However in obvius passing downs teams will play nickel(5 defensive backs) normally a 3-3 or 4-2 or dime(6 defensive backs) always 3-2. If its like 4th and twenty teams will play a quater defense(7 db's) normally a 3-1

Note: first number = line men second = linebackers (3-4) 3 line men and 4 line backers

Normally there are between 1-4 linebackers on the field at once but you could have more

usually the most is 4. some teams play 3-4 in which they have 3 desensive lineman and 4 linebackers, the most common form of defense is 4-3. 4 D lineman and 3 linebackers a middle linebacker to stuff the run and 2 outside linebackers to blitz or drop back into coverage, I have never seen a team with 5 linebackers because you have to have 2 cornerbacks on the recievers and 2 safeties. Last year the jets and steelers played a 3-4 set and im pretty sure the steelers did it again this year.

11 linebackers can be on the field for the defense, and 11 can be on the field for offense...so 22 total.

11, technically, I suppose, though some would probably have to line up at the line of scrimmage. The defense has a lot of flexibility to set the secondary however they want - quarter, dime, nickel, 3-4, 4-3, 4-6, whatever

up to 11 at one one time because thats the maximum amount of players that can be on the field at one time. generally though they play 2-4 at once.
