The term refers to a player in the organization but not on the 40-man (or major league) roster, who is nonetheless invited to the major league team's spring training camp.

Sometimes this is a way of saying "you're doing a great job" and sometimes it's a way of seeing what a young player can do, for later reference. It's a challenge to the young player to prove that they do belong in the show. Later in the season, if a player is injured for a long period of time or is traded from the 25-man roster, a player who had been a non-roster invitee might be called to the majors, having shown that he can handle himself at that level.

It is a player invited to participate in Spring Training games and practices, who IS NOT on the 40 man roster. A team can invite the player and evaluate him w/o taking up a spot on the 40 -man. If that player does end up making the team, another player must be removed from the 40- man. I'm not totally clear on the rules w/ this, but, I believe, when you remove a guy from the 40-man, he has to clear waivers and you could lose him... maybe that's a different question though... Godd question, I'm gonna do some research out of curiousity now.
