I mean as in those sites where you pic songs and just download it striaght to you comp. ie "sharing"
is it illegal to do this. if not what sites can I do this w/o getting viruses and into trouble....? (yes I am in the U.S.

Anything copyright is illegal to reproduce without permission, and by downloading it from a stranger you are reproducing the file without consent. As a rule of thumb, if you could buy it in a store, then it's illegal to copy it. Yes, some bands do allow people to share their music for publicity, but most music is copyright.

Anything you do online can be traces by your internet provider, so the only way to avoid trouble is to not download music.

Limewire is probably the best program to use if you still want to download music illegally, since it has no spyware. You can still get viruses and bad files, so make sure you do a virus scan on any and all files you download BEFORE you open/play them.
