Is it not safe to go to a pawn shop to do it?

That really depends on who you know and where you go. Some jewlers will do it for free, while others charge a fee (usually its not more than $10 bucks or so). If you trust someone at the pawn shop, usually they can do it also. Be careful with that though, as some pawn shops are not always honest. I would recommend a jewlery store unless you are very familiar with the pawn shop =)
