I put about 300 CDs on my computer at 192kbps. Was that a waste? Now it says my disc space is almost filled up. If I start over at 128kbps, how many more CDs could I fit? Would it make any difference in sound? What is the bitrate of a commercial CD?

I estimate that you could fit approximately 150 more CD's. 128 is two-thirds of 192 which would yield a 50% increase in the amount of CD's you could fit, provided that they stayed the same average length you've had already. It's only a waste if it's not worth the extra space to have the improved sound quality of using a higher bitrate. It would make a difference in sound, but a big enough difference to you, you have to decide on your own. Some people aren't happy unless all their MP3's are 320kbps. Some people could live with 96 and 112kbps. Others use lossless compression called FLAC which yields around 1000kbps. A commercial CD's bitrate is 1411.2kbps.
