My daughter is reading horribly for her age she is 6. She has spelling words and she is a great speller ...until she has to write the words on paper..I didn't have that much trouble reading when I was her age. I'm so frustrated.. i don't know what to do!!! i went to webMD and look at the symptoms she dosen't seem to have any of them. could this be a learning disability?..someone please HELP!!! FYI-she was born a 27 and a half weeks-does her being a premie have anything to do with it?

First, take a deep breath and remember that your daughter is only 6. There are several possibilities. Some of her reading difficulties could come from how she is being taught to read. Does she work on sounding words out or is she expected to know them? The spelling words could be that she feels rushed or that she is struggling going from what is in her head and getting it out on paper.

Try talking to her teacher. Ask if the teacher is concerned and try to listen carefully to what the teacher says. If it is possible, ask if someone can give her spelling test to her separately. This may help her feel more relaxed or it is possible that someone could write down the letters for her as she says them.

Good Luck

If you are really concerned I would talk to her teacher and ask their opinion of her skills. If they suggest that she is struggling ask if there is a Learning Resource Teacher that may be able to help her or ask if she is eligible to be assessed where she would undergo several tests to identify if there is a learning disability including dyslexia. If her teachers don't see a problem let her be and try and help her out at home by reading more and having her read the stories to you and try and increase her need to write at home like she could write out the grocery list. If this continues and she does not seem to get any better by the end of the year or when school starts up again contact the school and tell them that you are concerned. You could also see your doctor and ask about signs of this disability or about her premature birth and whether this would cause her to be a little behind. If so you may want to consider having her held back one year in school to catch up to the other students if the teacher doesnt suggest this to you. Good luck, remember not every child develops at the same rate!
