It's hard to top "Memoirs of a Geisha". "The Girl Who Played Go" by Shan Sa is a good but depressing but. The ending is rather unsatisfying though. Amy Tan's "Joy Luck Club" is great. I like all her books I've read so far. "Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China" by Jung Chang is a biography of her, her mother and her grandmother living through a tumultuos period of Chinese history. Laura John Rowland has written some good samurai mysteries. Sorry I can't help you with princesses.

Good luck and good reading.

Have you read "The Good Earth"? It is fantastic. No pricesses, but this will definitely keep you hooked. I wasn't a fan of much of Buck's other writings excepts for "The Living Reed" (which was about Koreans). The rest of the series following "The Good Earth" got progressively more disappointing.

For another great Japanese novel, try "Shogun". There's an old movie version too, but I haven't seen it. It is long, but very interesting to learn the history.
