romanticism- basically the idea that everything is not about logic, facts, and the present. The period is characterized by the beauty of nature, intuition, feeling, emotion, etc. The opposite of classicism. the period also looked more into the past. fictional writing was born in this period.

anti-romanticism- based on the straight facts. no sort of feelings or emotion, just what you can observe. belief that nature is just a machine, something to be "figured out". all the writing was non-fiction and very serious.

gothic- fascination with the abnormal, bizarre, and supernatural.
