While sort of belly-flopping onto my bed, my leg hit the edge just below the knee. My leg was completely straight and I think it, um, "unbent" more than a leg normally unbends. I immediately thought, "shoot, that didn't mess up a tendon or something, did it?" but it didn't really hurt much, it hurt like something that's just been whacked against a semi-hard surface.

That was about 3 hours ago. Now I have this mild pain shooting down my leg every few seconds, and when I change position. It barely hurts, but it's strange. It starts about halfway down the front of my shin and gets most intense at the top of my foot. When I chang my position, sometimes I feel it at my knee, too.

I'd like to avoid going to the hospital. I want to do something to minimize the damage, whatever I can do to make it not get worse.

What do you recommend I do? Put ice on it? Put heat on it? Walk it off? Do squat exercises? Keep my leg still for a day? Take muscle relaxants? Avoid muscle relaxants?

Thanks!!

Oh yeah, and no visible damage, no bruising or swelling. No loss of mobility.

And do I keep it bent or straight?

Thank you all for the answers so far! I have a pack of frozen peas on my knee now.

You may have just bruised or sprained you knee, but a torn ACL could also be a possibility. I vote if it continues to hurt or if it starts to collapse at weird times...go to the doctor and get an MRI. If you tore your ACL etc, you may need surgery to correct it. I popped my knee teaching a martial arts lesson and it didn't hurt or swell, but it would sort of collapse at strange times by twisting or pivoting on it. Didn't hurt, but would collapse nonetheless. Had to have surgery to correct it. Good luck!!

For now heat and ice if this don't get better in a few days you should see a Doctor, if there is improvement just wait as they will make a big production out of maybe nothing. They love to do tests and poke needles in a person. With the old people they just love to operate, but remember you are not exempt. If you feel a clicking feeling when you bend it go to a Doctor right away.

You may have cracked the shin bone, just below the knee, staying off the leg and elevating it for awhile wouldn't be a bad idea. You really should have the leg xrayed to make sure you haven't broken the bones. Usually, cold is best for broken bones and the swelling that happens with that. If you do not believe you have broken anything, you can try staying off the leg as much as possible for a week or so, and see if it improves. If not...see a doctor.

Ice pack and keep off it for a while. This will keep the swelling down. I've done this before and it was never serious. But if it seems to be getting worse, better be safe and see a doctor. You will probably have a nice bruise. Take care!

Ouch! Sorry to hear that~ Umm..I would suggest Ice pack on your leg 20min on, 20 min off..20 min back on ..etc.. To take the swelling down.. and keep leg elevated..place pillow under your leg.
I would consider getting it checked tho. You may have seriously injured it.
Keep an eye out for alot of swelling and redness on your leg..I got a blood clot once from a nasty bash on my leg getting out of a car.
ps..take tylonol for the pain every 4-6hrs. and Consider going to have it looked at tomorrow. Take care~

Ice it and keep it up. That should minimize swelling and pain later.
