The father was still smoking and due to die from lung cancer If I remember correctly. Apparently at some point he realized what he needed to live for.

He saved his father but he did not get to re-live his life. Instead he had all those memories flash by him, remember? But when the movie showed the "present day" (when they were playing baseball), his dad was there with him. Does this make sense?

my guess, everything had to be put in its' proper place (in time) if you remember, when he saved his old man in the first place, it only made him die of cancer, then the creepy long haired dude decided to off the cop's mom. try watching back to the future, it'll explain the time-travel crap better
