what you do, the faster way, is put your windows xp cd in the cdrom drive. if you don't already have one, buy it legally because of the microsoft genuine advantage program.
reboot the computer to the cd. follow the onscreen instructions to format your drive and install windows.
these are the simplest directions anyone can give you.

If you have the windows XP disc already, you can just pop it in restart your pc and it should boot right up to the disc. If not there may be a key you need to press to choose the boot order (f12, f8, etc depending on pc brand) or you can change it in the bios (usually accessed by pressing the del key or f2 depending on the pc). However you do it, when you get into the windows xp set up it will ask you about partitions. Delete your current partition, then reset the partition size and install. You should be good to go from there. Just make sure you backed up everything because it's a real pain to recover files after a format and OS install.

Make sure you have a bootable Windows Installation disk and not an upgrade disk.
Boot from a CD or floppy and run fdisk to partition the hard drive. Then format it. Boot from the Windows CD and follow instructions. I prefer NTFS rather than FAT32. If you choose NTFS there are old utility programs, like some Norton programs, that won't work any more.

Just put the Windows XP disc in and reboot, this should prompt you for what you want to do. If this doesn't work, reboot and press F12, then select the boot order>CD. This will wipe your drive and install a new version of Windows.
