Within the past few days, I've been craving ice. I think that it's pretty weird because my teeth are EXTRA sensitive. Anyway, I've heard that craving ice is usual with pregnant women, but it could also be a symptom of iron deficiency. So far, the results of the tests that I've taken state that I'm not anemic. Could this quite possibly be just a weird craving and is there anyone else out there who is having or had the same craving?

I've been anemic before and I've never craved ice when I was.

That is normal. But if you start to crave non food items, like dirt or laundry soap, call the Dr. This is a serious thing that happens...

Hmm I always knew craving ice as needing iron also. I'm not sure what else, maybe you just have this weird craving. This article says it might have to do with another nutrional problem.

Possibly. Doctors use the term "pica" to describe craving and chewing substances that have no nutritional value — such as ice, clay, cornstarch and paper. Craving and chewing ice (pagophagia) is often associated with iron deficiency anemia — although it may be associated with other nutritional problems as well. In some individuals, pica is a symptom of emotional problems, such as stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder or a developmental disorder.

A thorough medical evaluation can help determine if pica is due to an underlying medical condition. If the cause of pica is an emotional or developmental issue, cognitive behavior therapy may be helpful.

I craved water and ice through both of my pregnancies with no iron deficiency problems. Toward the end with both of them I was going through at least 4 32 oz glasses of water a day often more like 6. I also have sensitive teeth which is probably why I drank so much water along with my ice. If you fill a 32 oz( non-insulated) cup to the brim with ice and then top with tap water if you drink the water fast enough you will be left with half a cup of half melted easy to chew ice. It's incentive to drink all the water you need and easier on the teeth. An easier solution is the Sonic ice pellets are available in 10 lb bags at the drive thru. Congratulations on your little one.

Wow I am so glad to hear that someone else has craved ice. When I was pregnant 3 years ago I also craved ice, it wasn't the taste of ice but the urge to crunch it. I also had sensitive teeth but the urge was more servere than the pain in my teeth. In a way craving ice is a good thing though because ice isnt fattening. We could crave chocolate! I dont think that ice has anything to do with iron though because I hear when you need iron that you crave coal and dirt. Good Luck

I craved ice with one of my pregnancies and I was not anemic. I have heard people say that odd cravings are because of some deficiency, but mine was not.

I didn't have it, but it does help to calm people down. My sister had this craving, don't worry talk your prenatal vitamins and you'll be fine about the iron situation. it's just a craving.
