What is the name of the Virus it detected? It could actually be a Trojan (trojans are not viruses). AV programs can detect them, but, usually, not remove them.

Tell AVG to delete the Virus. Run the program again and see if it is still on your computer. If it is, it is not a virus, or it is a new virus that AVG is not update to detect and remove.

Post the name of the "Virus" so you can be give specific instructions or programs that will remove it.

Try the settings menu and look for actions to take. The free version will probably be limited. Set the first action to quarantine and the second to delete.
If the file is in use, AVG wont be able to delete it since Window$ protects active processes for system stability. Try this: Write down the name and location of the infected file. Next, reboot the comp, when the screen goes black (before WIndow$ starts to reboot) start tapping the F8 key. This will bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, select Safe Mode. Log into the Administrator Account and run the scan. The virus/trojan probably won't load and will be open to attack. If you can't run AVG in safe mode, just navigate or use search to find the program and delete it.
If you use Window$ XP Home, this is where you find the Administrator Account which you need. If you don't have a password, create one.
If it says it's protected, right click the file and choose 'Properties' and make sure that the 'Read Only' box is unchecked. If it's checked, uncheck it and hit 'Apply' and 'Ok' and close it and try again to delete it.
To be safe go to BitDefender.com for a free anti-virus scan and cleaning. Also add Lavasofts's AD-Aware (free), SaferNetworking's SpyBot S & D (free), and Grisofts AVG anti-spyware (free and paid available) to your arsenal. Update and scan with all at least weekly.
If you don't have a firewall, GET ONE. Zonelabs has a free version of ZoneAlarm.
Trojans and virus's are now part of everyday net life. Be prepared and be proactive. Update and scan weekly.
For a safer, faster browser, try Mozilla FireFox and their ThunderBird E-mail client. Free and far superior to M$'s crap-ware.
Good luck!
