It's because your emotions are your initial attraction trigger. Envy or covetousness fall on a emotional foundation of lack in your own life. So if you skip the rational part of the equation and jump to your assumed solution-- that the guy she has would fix all of your problems therein lies the problem. No two people are alike and someone that is perfect for her might clash with you. We as people act differently around our environment and the people around us. You have a work mode, play mode, serious mode, and a passive mode. So your coworkers might think of you very differently than close friends for example on a general level. On the specific side, different people will see different sides of you depending on the situation as well and will have conflicting ideas
about you in some cases
But the other thing is even if you can't choose your attraction target, you can make a rational decision to avoid problems and not deliberate over it. It will make your life a lot less bitter. You just lay down the law when you catch yourself thinking along those line "I'm not doing that to myself" and be done with it.

I cant stop thinking about a guy who has a girlfriend, we see each other all the time (i.e we are, or were close friends) and i know its wrong to think this way, so now ive stopped seeing him, but hes upset and thinks im angry at him. I really dont know what to do, i didnt ask to feel this way, no i feel no need to be loved and believe me i get no satisfaction from this!

Oh its not just women, it goes quadruply(?) for men. A couple of years back there was this beautiful, smart, hot girl who wanted to go out with me (only god knows why) anyway i was in a half relationship with this girl who couldnt make up her mind, so naturally pursued this girl who couldnt make up her mind and ignored the other. I now no longer see the girl who i was in a half thing with, and the hot girl now has a boyfriend. I am friends with this girl but could not stop thinking about her for months, i still see her everyday but have grown apart over the past 6 months.
Anyway i have moved on.
Although it does feel good to get that off my chest as i can't talk about it as she is going out with a friend of mine.

you can't help who you find attractive! I'm in no way condoning someone trying to steal someone Else's partner etc. Maybe it is the forbidden lust that drives them..they want what they cant have which makes it more exciting. I don't think all woman that want someone they cant have will try and get them but some do. Whether they need to be loved or not is down to the individual.

It's all about pursuing the impossible.
Whatever we want is often unattainable by proper, lawful means!

It's human nature. We always want what we can't have. Just remember, happiness isn't having what we want, true happiness is simply wanting what we have.
