Cos no-one is doing any maintenance to it. If you live in a house you are constantly fixing things!

Houses need people in them. The most obvious answer is the maintenance. But usually it is humidity that eats away at a house that is not heated or airconditioned. As most houses in America are made of wood, the damp is what rots the wood and thus causes the the window frames to seperate from the walls. That lets the damp in and rots the interior.

The house falls apart even if you do live in it after sometime so long as you don't maintain it - like simple cleaning; keep all the mice and termites out. Renovations or the need to get them won't be realized either, if there's nobody around.

friends and i were talking about this recently as there are some nice houses around here that, though they are still owned, have been 'orphaned'. they are dying. there is no life being lived inside of them so that which they had soaked up is dissipating. something of a relationship develops between the house and the people that live in it. three of the houses we were talking about are still viable- for now. the owner will not rent them; he will not sell. they are dying. as old folks do when denied love and care.

Lack of maintenance would be number one. And if there is a catastrophic event such as flooding or a small fire, there's no one there to stop it or clean up and repair afterwords.

I t will fall apart if you live in it too. If you live in it you continually fix it up, mainly by keeping out destructive pests and insects

Because houses need maintenance. They will fall apart even if you live there, if you don't maintain them.
