I prefer I-Tunes, but that's because I like the I-Tunes/I-pod user friendly interface and easy compatibility. If I were using a different MP3 player I might not be so enthused, because I-Tunes doesn't actually use MP3s, but a different format.
Nevertheless, I speak highly of them. Songs for $0.99 and most albums for $9.99, also music videos and movies available through them have made a repeat customer out of me.
But if you're looking for free music (the illegal kind), then you need some kind of .torrent software, and http://www.torrentspy.com is my favorite place for .torrents of any kind because they have their files pretty well organized.

I use torrent, this is the best and probably the fastest way to get data and music for free. I use the UTorrent program to download the data and Piratebay.com to search for the torrents. Piratebay is located in Canada and is not affected, yet, by the legal battles going on here is the US.
