That depends on where you live. If you are in a very cold climate you must use good judgement and buy something that is warm above all else. That means it covers the tush and has a hood and buttons or zips closed with no problems. it must function well. Then think of the style and color once you find that it is functional.. with down or from a place known for good winter clothing like L.L.Bean or something. Also, if you plan on wearing it for a couple of years I would go for a neutral color, tan or brown or kaki because they are timeless and don't go out of style. If you live in a milder climate where you only need it a month or two out of the year you can go with something not as functional, maybe not as long but it is always nice to keep the bottom warm when getting into or sitting on a cold surface or car seat. You may not need the hood but can use just a hat alone and having down or anything like that might be too warm too many months out of the year. I'd make sure to get something I really love and keep it for a few years unless you are growing, then don't spend quite so much on it, it might not fit next year.
