why are the ohio state university teams named the buckeyes?

Ohio is the Buckeye State.

A buckeye is a seed pod from a particular type of Oak tree. It looks almost like a walnut, but slightly bigger...With a leathery skin on the outside, and hard nut-like seed on the inside.
