The growth of democracy and the French Revolution were influenced by Enlightenment social contract theory; the growth of scientific method was strongly influenced by Enlightenment faith in reason, as was the anti-religious movement of the nineteenth century. Even emperors such as Catherine the Great and Maria Theresa were affected by the Enlightenment insistence on rational government.
