so i can't actually find the answer in my book. and don't actually understand it very well. so the question is. What will the ratio of ions be in any compound formed from a group 1A metal and a group 7A nonmetal?

Group 1A metals have a charge of 1+ when they are an ion. (ex: Na+). Group 7A nonmetals have 7 outer electrons, thus, they have a charge of -1 when they are an ion (ex: Cl-).

Since they have an equal charge, the ratio will be 1:1.
