The car will not crank. The car has always been very dependable. When she was leaving school, the car would not crank. She had a freind jump the car off and she drove it about 1 mile. The car stalled again and i went to get it. I got the car to crank but when i reved the engine to about 4000 rpm's, there was a noticable skip that was consistant. The car would idle just fine but at higher rpm's the skip would be there. I turned the car off and have not been able to crank it sinse. Does this sound like the engine has skipped time? The engine still turns over so i know the belt is not broken. Any help?

The skip is the rev-limiter kicking in. It just won't let you rev it that high unless your in gear and moving. Sounds like she may just need a new battery, especially if its still got the original.

99 Sunfire engine whether it be a 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, or 3.1 all use a timing chain. The chain usually will not break and I have not had too many of these jump time. There is a limiter that keeps you from blowing up the engine but I didn't think it would kick in at 4000 RPM.

I would check the charge of the battery and then look into a tune-up and see what happens.

If it is a quad 4 engine, look to replace the coil tower and boots, the tower will carbon track and misfire. Cost is approx $130 for the tower. Boots are about $6 a piece.

This may sound assinine, but what is the state of the battery, and charging system. You made mention of jumping is why I ask. I have run into something like that before, it seems like if it's gonna run, it should run, and if not, then not. . . I think it has to do with all the electronics and such, uses more power more quickly at higher RPM. . . Next you might try a Tune-up. . . Plugs, wires, distributor cap (unless it's distributorless ignition, then you may want to check the coil packs) I hope this gave you some ideas.
Good luck

Clean up BOTH battery cables, make sure they're tight, charge the battery and have the charging system tested. If it cranked when you jumped it - the battery has issues. The battery may have issues because of a poor connection, bad alternator, or even bad cables. From the sounds of it the battery/charging system is your only problem.

First check the battery, connections to the battery. If the alternator has crapped out, the battery will be dead. Revving the engine is not a good test unless your charging system (including the battery) is OK.

Sounds like the Alternator went bad and the battery lost charge. When that happens the car will run untill the battery losses charge and will gradualy run worse untill the battery is completely discharged.

sounds to me that the battery is dead due to a bad alternator and jumping it put enough juice to go a mile and after that it quit, if there is no juice to the battery all the electrical functions of the car are starving for juice and will act up, get the alternator checked and I bet you found the problem.
