Speaking to people using plain-english words, so that you both speak the same language, instead of using management jargon like 'Synergy', 'Empowerment', etc, where your every sentence takes them 30 seconds to decode, if they can manage it at all.

To send a clear message to someone, both the person speaking and the person listening must understand it to mean the same thing.

Using jargon instantly makes employees/co-workers/subordinates label you as an idiot that has just read a cheap management paperback, that they will switch off to and ignore in future.

The most powerful management technique is "fly x seat of pants" developed by Donald Petersen of Ford Motor Company. I like the way Ford’s directionless offensive gained a competitive demeanor without leaving the confines of their own company. In the process, GM had to take a back seat for the first time in resent history as auto sales plummeted to all time lows. In summary, I got my points and didn’t really know what I was talking about, but like the “fly x seat of pants” technique is famous for “At least we will head in a direction as never before”.

I am a manager and I am the greatest of all time... Everyone listens to me - I use a lot of pointing and head nods (like, nooooo you don't mister - i'm watching you)... I also like to set an example every 3 pay periods by firing someone (our pay periods are every 2 weeks so its just enough time to forget the last guy).

E-mail, they love the e mail, if there were no e mail many managers would be out of work.
