Most of them are from other nations (Iran, Pakistan, ect). But they do have some from here in Iraq. How they get here there is no telling, I would imagine by car or truck. When the US was threatening to come to Iraq, the insurgents were filtering in by the thousands every day. The military has killed thousands of them since the beginning of the war. The trouble is we don't know who the insurgents are..they in the general population and are 'well camouflaged'.

Just keep in mind depending on who you ask and what their political views are you will get different answers. Republicans will most likely say they are Muslims who hate America and want Islam to rule the world. Democrats will most likely say they are simply Iraqi civilians. The truth is the term "insurgents" can be applied to whomever you want. There is always a way to tweak the definition to fit your goal. And the "insurgents" are made up of a VARIED group.
(Also, keep in mind the majority of the violence in Iraq is Sunni vs. Shiite violence. And not caused by what we have been led to believe are the "insurgents" ie, Al Qaeda in Iraq.)
The truth is often somewhere in the middle.

The insurgents are the rival Shite and Sunni factions fighting one another and US Troops. Apparently, Bush thinks sending in 21 thousand more soldiers will cause these 2 sides to end their 800 year old religious struggle and embrace peace. Reality says, we are stuck right in the middle of a civil war of our own making. They couldn't even have Saddam executed without the masked men spouting rhetioc in support of a chief cleric of these insurgents. Yeah Bush your really on top of the situation in Iraq.

the vast majority of them are Iraqi citizens that want us out of the country. One might call them resistance fighters. If someone invaded the U.S. , people like you and I might be considered insurgents if we fought back.

They are Iraqi citizens resentful of being occupied, imagine if Iraq busted into our country, hung the president, knocked down all the buildings, killed your family, and built a big army base, people might eventually shoot back

Anyone we disagree with.
Some of them live there and some of them have come in from other countries to kick us out of Arab lands. They come in the usual ways. We haven't made many friends in that part of the world, or any other part come to think of it.
