Most rocks are basic in nature so the carbolic will dissolve a small part of the basic material. Similar to the acid on cement. this will move the acidity toward PH7 or salt.

Carbonic acid is used on rocks to tell if they are carbonates. They bubble if they are.

Sharon is right, the acid literally eats away at certain minerals in the rock.
