You just break everything into its lowest common denominator. In the first example, that is fourths, in the second example it's thirds.
2 1/4 is equal to 2+1/4
2=1+1
1=4/4
Therefore, 2=8/4 and 2 1/4=9/4
See how that works.
3=9/3, so 3 1/3=10/3

2 1/4 is a compound number that is the same as 9/4.
(There are 8 fourths in 2, plus the other one-fourth that was already in a fraction.)
3 1/3 equals 10/3.
(3 has 9 thirds, plus the one-third.)

2 1/4 and 1 1/3 are called mixed numbers. If you want fractions, multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator. Put that over the original denominator
9/4, and 4/3
