My obgyn said I would probably be able to breast feed but wanted me to ask the pediatrician. I chose one that was recommended by more than 1 person. He said the only reason not to breast feed would be if you were HIV positive. Seems a little extreme. However I am already taking effexor now while preganant. I at least want to breast feed in order to ween the baby off of it so she doesn't go through withdrawls.

Safefetus.com is a good source of info for what drugs are safe to take while pregnant and nursing.

According to them, it says it can cause unwanted effects in the baby, but doesn't really say what those effects are. Is there something else you can take? I would also consult and pharmacist and maybe lactation consultant if you are still concerned. Dr. Tom Hale also is an expert on this and maybe you can google him and ask him a question - he has a pretty good website, from what I remember.

I was immediately uncertain, but checked in Davis' Drug Guide. Effexor is not the safest choice for pregnant women (Category C, which means studies haven't been conducted to demonstrate it's safety in humans during pregnancy), but if your OB and Pediatrician okay it, then it's a judgment call. I would recommend discussing alternatives with your OB at your next visit. Don't panic or fret too much, and please do not stop your meds without consulting your physician! It's a very risky move. At this point, there's no reason to think your baby is in any danger, but perhaps there's a drug that has been tested safe for pregnant women and their babies.
I would also seriously question the good sense of your pediatrician. There are many circumstances where it is not wise to breastfeed, and many medications that cannot be used while nursing. The doctor should be aware of that. The doctor should also realize that many HIV + women give birth to babies with HIV, which makes the restriction of nursing unnecessary. I'm not at all impressed, based on what you've said.
Good luck, and a happy pregnancy!

Not true...I didn't breastfeed becase of being on Zoloft.

Pediatrician should learn to be more open minded...there are many reasons people don't breastfeed.
