I've received several twinsets of "excellent" towels recently as gifts. Each of the sets 1) sheds like mad, even after washing twice, and 2) just doesn't absorb water!

We have a cleaning business and go through alot of rags, This is how I clean them. Wash in hot water, instead of using fabric softener, put 1/4 cup of white vinegar in the last rinse cycle. Dry on high heat. Once they are dry, run them through the dryer a second time on a low heat, this helps get the lint out, keeps them from shedding. If they are white and you are using bleach, cut back on the bleach since this breaks down the fibers and causes them to fall apart earlier.

Even the best towels shed. And I suppose you mean in the dryer. They don't absorb yet because the manufacturer uses a lot of fabric softener to make them appealing. Keep washing them and see what happens.

Fabric and sizing, meaning a kind of starch manufacturers put the towels, will affect how the towels react to water. You could try washing and drying in different temperatures. Or, find out who made them and talk to the manufacturers/store managers. Good luck!

Wash them in the hottest water possible and air dry them. After that wash them normally and use liquid fabric softener.
