and would it be any different taking the wifi router on the road with you? would it be the same as looking for hotspots or would it detect them from far away?

The router is a device to allow you to network any computers you have together and will also allow you to share a broadband (Cable or DSL) internet connection. You need to have an active DSL or cable internet account and its associated modem.

You can take the router on the rode, but will do you no good unless you have a broadband internet account were you are traveling to. But it does help in hotels were you can get broadband connections and want to surf from bed instead of sitting at a desk or getting a long ethernet cable to use.
