After a PhD you can do what is called "Post-Doc" work. This is extremely common in technical fields if one wants to become a college professor. It's a step on the ladder below an Assistant Professor. You can be stuck there for years. My husband's PhD is in Physics from Princeton and I'd say a quarter of his buddies went on to post-doc work.

How about a D.Sc or better still go and work using your PhD to put something back into the education system.
There are many opportunities that don't need a CRB check, e.g. WEA, U3A, etc.
Without knowing your subject it is difficult to offer any other specific avenues.
