well it's kind of both

cake --

a cake has that rich, yummy part

pie --

the crust of the cheesecake is like a pie

so basically the
bottom = pie
the top = cake


anddd. i'm just going w/ cake cuz afterall -- it's cheeseCAKE...

This is actually the only good question I've seen on this damn site. Cheesecake is a pie due to its hard crust that encases a filling.

It's not exactly a pie and not exactly a cake. It's a cross between cake and custard (pumpkin pie type of pie).

I say pie because it's shaped like that, but maybe it's cake that has flattened out because of all that heavy cheese in it.
