In the UK it is illegal to own a bat either alive or dead, it is also illegal to own any part of a bat. It is illegal to disturb a bat or its roost. It is also illegal to purposely kill a bat. You can however attract bats in your area by providing bat boxes, but it is illegal to open them once they have been put up. You can watch bats from a distance. There is "bat listening" equiptment available on the market. This is a little box that tunes into the bats high pitched frequency and converts the high pitched squeaks that a bat makes into a series of clicks that can be heard by the human ear. The pattern of clicks varies between bat species. A local group near us ran a bat watching evening with bat listening equipment- it was a fantastic experience, not only did we get to see bats flying around, we could also hear them calling out. My son loved it. I would definately recommend bat watching.
