That busing kids in from different neighborhoods in an attempt to balance ethnic diversity amongst all the city's public schools is a positive experience.

I hated not going to school in my own neighborhood and not going to the same schools as my neighbors. We were all scattered throughout our city at different schools. We never had opportunities to socialize with the kids we went to school with because we all lived in different neighborhoods. Parent participation at the school was non-existent because it was a trek across town.

The experience actually reinforced many of the negative racial stereotypes the integration was trying to dispel. We were frequently exposed to school yard fights, incidents of theft, and deliquent behavior from certain groups. It wasn't until much later that we learned "to unlearn" these bad assumptions through positive relationships and experiences outside of the public school environment.

The lords prayer. Was read over the PA every morning then we did Pledge of Allegiance, I can forget the lords prayer, I do not think that pledge is a truth anymore either.
I no longer think it represents a Democratic Republic or anything my father fought against in Declared Wars.
So Lords Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance are kinda junk now. I am not certain wich of the two is of any matter or contains any truth.
Ok, I keep the lords prayer, only if I am free to choose wich or what god I want today.

Mmmm..... Either my memory is faulty or everything I learned was golden.

The best I can come up with is that when drawing pictures of your Hawaiian teacher, you shouldn't color her face with black crayon.

You know what? I have to agree about the cooties. We weren't that specific, and perhaps it wasn't first grade, but I do recall being told not to step on the dark brown floor tiles because they belonged to the boys and had boy germs.

Nothing; what I learned in the first grade still serves a purpose for me.

two things -
1. that before you speak you raise your hand. that doesn't work in the corporate world, especially during meetings. as a habit i always raise my hand before i speak, but people never pay attention to pick me. then the meeting is over and i didn't get a chance to say anything!
2. to call my teacher Mrs. Feliz. My god...once you become 18 you are an adult. I have such a hard time calling people by their first names and when I call them Mr. or Mrs. they say, don't say that, it makes me feel old!

Hehe...probably to raise my hand and wait for the teacher...because in high school, teachers don't look for raised hands, they just listen for the first voice to shout out the answer. Also, the idea that boys have cooties!

And that Pat's eye ring isn't cursed :) Long story.

That when you smile at someone they have no choice but to smile back.

I smile all the time to be friendly in different situations and i can tell you that I don't always get a smile in return.
That particular bit of wisdom has left me VERY BITTER!
